These are for glass lab thermometers that don't have a ring on top. It prevents it from rolling, and the loop can be used to hold it up. It's a pack of 25. They are purple (apparently the only color available), soft vinyl rubber which grips well. H-B also makes a triangular style which is simply a ring without the loop on top.
