As I recall, someone else mentioned the sound effects not being too good. No, doesn't really sound like a crackling fire to me, but you can mute it. I am happy with my purchase - temp control, ambiance control (brightness of flame image), and it works...also doesn't get hot anywhere on the unit, other than the air coming out the front vents. The fan is a bit loud, but I don't mind. My Dad and Step-mom have one like this, so I already knew I'd like it. I looked around, but ended up with one just like theirs. Good for the price!
