This refractometer is perfect for occasional use, and comes with directions, adjustment screwdriver, water reference solution, and a lint-free cloth; all in a handy foam-lined carrying case. It seems solid & reliable, and I recommend it for anyone with a basic need to measure the strength of propylene glycol solutions, ethylene glycol solutios, or battery acid.

I have a oil-fired boiler with a 3-zone hydronic heating system (two air handlers and a hot water tank). I live in Connecticut. Last winter on a very cold night the upstairs (attic) heat quit working (it just blew cold air), so I assumed the propylene glycol solution in the system had become diluted over time, and turned to non-pumpable slush in the lines. When the weather warmed up it started working again.

To check the concentration of the propylene glycol, I purchased this refractometer, and found that the freeze point in the system was only 23 F! Needless to say, I addressed this issue before the weather turned cold this fall.

Well worth the money, and now I will check the hydronic fluid before each heating season to make sure I'm ready.
