Fits easily into smaller brew kettles. 25' copper tubing. It is important to cool beer (wort) to yeast pitching temperature in the shortest possible time. By putting a wort chiller into a brew kettle at the end of the boil and running cool water through the chiller, it is possible to cool the wort below 80 degrees in 12 to 15 minutes. This reduces the lag time between the boil and active yeast fermentation. Comes with a garden hose attachment to easily hook up your wort chiller to an outdoor faucet, or use a faucet adapter to hook this unit up to an indoor sink. Compact 8" Copper Immersion Wort Chiller Review

Great chiller for the right size pot. I have this pot: Alpha Heavy Gage 24 Qt Stainless Steel Stock Pot with Glass Lid By Savezoneusa /Alpha and found that the chiller sat a little high in the pot to be fully immersed and effective. This was due to the bottom ring of copper sitting about an inch or two lower than the main set of coils. After doing a little bending of the copper, I was able to lower the main set of coils toward the bottom, thus immersing more of the coils into the wort. Once I did that, it worked much more effectively. This was a problem for me, with my brew kettle as it is wider.

The Hanna Instruments HI 96821 brix refractometer is a portable meter for measuring salinity levels in food preparations.

The HI 96821 measures salt content in aqueous food solutions, with results available within seconds. To take a reading, the sample well must be calibrated with distilled or deionized water, followed by a few drops of the sample liquid. A dual-level LCD screen displays the measurement and temperature within several seconds. The HI 96821 converts the refractive index of the sample to one of four popular units for measuring salinity: g/100 g, g/100 mL, Specific Gravity, and degrees Baumé.

The 9V battery operated device utilizes a yellow LED as a light source, and automatically powers off after three minutes of non-use. The HI 96821 has a range of 0 to 28 g/100 mL, 0 to 34 g/100 mL, 1.000 to 1.216 specific gravity, or 0 to 26 degrees Baumé. Temperature compensation is automatic between 10 and 40 degrees C (50 to 104 degrees F).

Refractometers measure refractive index, which is the optical characteristic of a substance and the number of dissolved particles in it. Refractive index is the ratio of the speed of light in empty space to the speed of light in the substance. Refractometers can be used to ensure proper salinity levels in aqueous solutions.

Hanna Instruments HI 96821 Brix Refractometer for Measuring Sodium Chloride in Food Review

I decided to take a slightly expensive gamble and pick up this product to see if I could test for salt content in food, similar to those nutrition listings on packages. I wanted to see what kind of variation there is (since the FDA does allow some small margins), and also to test prepared foods in home cooking and restaurant items. It was about $175 here.

After doing some tests with it, I have mixed feelings about it. That is not to say it's not a good item, but it's not entirely clear what it can be used for accurately. I've tried to do a lot of research on it online first, but the results have been inconclusive... many sites and a few postings asking the same question I do, but no definite answers.

I am going to suggest an answer here, based on those results I am getting from the testing apparatus. It makes me wonder if it can only be used on clear liquids, and, even more unsure whether they have to be colorless liquids or not. (Edit: after another few tests the colors do seem to be less of a problem than the obscurity of the liquid).

The benchmark test was EXACT... the unit performed perfectly upon reading 10g salt per 100g of water when I mixed it up myself (as the instruction book suggested). This makes me think the unit works perfectly... for its design, but possibly only for a narrow set of applications?

I am puzzled because I get crazy crazy results for cloudy and possibly for colored liquids. Milk consistently reads 11.5 and natural (clouded) cranberry juice... 35 ! The juice is supposed to be 1/4 the salt content of the milk... and even the milk reading is too high.

All this leads me to believe this unit may have quite limited usefulness for me. I was hoping to be able to test sauces and dressings and general mulched compositions, but most of these are either cloudy or opaque, not to mention often with color. I suppose that some can be tested, but the percentage of just clear and colorless juices, etc, is rather small... so this item may have very limited use, at least as far as I can tell. Anyone who has more information on this sort of testing, please comment or write a review also. Also, anyone who can suggest a better test system for salt in food, I'd love to know about that as well.

The item itself seems solid, the manual is small but very helpful (in doing what needs to be done, but not in explaining the above questions).

It does state that it is also not intended for testing salinity in ocean water, so that is another less thing it can do, ...so there's no need to take it on your picnic to the beach :)

"Quality of this product is cheap, I would go through Kegkit.com or Kegconnection.com if I did it again $30 cheaper for same tower. Towers insulation is a joke "PAPER THIN" and it had some scratches on it out of the box."
