I often feel that a chef's toque can look a little pretentious when it is worn outside of a kitchen or restaurant (especially if you are not a real chef.) There is now a whole generation of young food professionals who have modernized the chef's hat by wearing a variety of small hats and caps designed for the food industry. This beanie is one of them.

At the same time that I bought this cap I also purchased the Chef Works Chalk Stripe Bib Apron, which I love (it will be my new favorite apron for the foreseeable future.) I decided to purchase this skull cap to go with it for a couple of reasons:

* As I have mentioned, I don't want to wear a "classic" chef's hat (see the links below)
* I don't like to wear caps with brims (such as a baseball cap) when preparing food as the brim gets in my way (link below)
* It matches my new apron (link above and below)

All in all I am happy with it. It is made out of a thick material and it looks sharp. The elastic should hold up for a long time and it will fit a lot of different sized heads. That being said, it is a little tight on me (I have been told that I have a big head by more than one person.) The other thing that I discovered is that, although it looks fairly hip and cool on the 20 to 30-something crowd, in my opinion (and that of a few of my close friends) it is a different story when worn by a large man in his mid-50's. Still, I will keep wearing it while I look for something a little more "age-appropriate."
